Mentoring

Mentoring: About

Why Become a Mentor?

The REAL Early College Mentoring Program is a way for you to collaborate and connect with juniors and seniors taking classes at JCU. The REAL Early College Mentoring Program allows you to make a difference in a students life.

Share your knowledge and experience

Early College Mentors will be able to share their knowledge and experience with students by meeting with them once a week on campus. Mentors can share stories, resources, or even advice with the students!

Make a difference in a person’s life

You are one of the first college students these students will meet -- you have the power and ability to impact their high school and college career! Because you are there supporting a student, they have been given an opportunity they might not have had without you!

Improve leadership and communication skills

As mentors, you will learn how to communicate not just with your peers, but with students who look up to you.

Time Commitment

Students are required to participate in a training in the spring prior to the academic year in which they will mentor.  Training will combine 3 in person sessions and some online training.  Mentors will then be matched with an Early College student and begin mentoring responsibilities the following fall.  Mentors are required to meet with their mentee for a minimum of 30 minutes per week during the academic year they are committed.  Mentors can also expect between 1-2 other meetings or group activities each semester to help build community among mentors and mentees.  This commitment also includes email and phone communication in order to provide well rounded support of the Early College Student.  Mentor-mentee meetings are coordinated on an individual basis based on availability of both individuals. Mentors should plan on being involved with the program for a minimum of a full academic year.
